Southern Cross Care (Broken Hill) Ltd as it is now known was started in March 1974 as a branch of New South Wales Southern Cross Home Inc by an Order of Catholic Men known as The Knights of the Southern Cross (Branch 14, Broken Hill). They formally adopted the building of a 40 unit retirement village, Con Crowley Village, as a branch project. The building of a Community Centre saw the completion of the Village in 1982. In 1982 a 60 place Nursing Home, Centenary Nursing Home, was established at the former WS & LB Robinson University College site. Southern Cross Care also took on the administration of the Home of Compassion Nursing Home in 1984. Care for 27 residents at the War Veterans’ Hostel was transferred in 1998 to Southern Cross Care and 58 residents at Aruma Lodge Hostel was transferred in 2004. Care for the aged in Broken Hill was upgraded in 2006 when a new 121 bed facility, St Anne’s, was constructed to house the residents of the Centenary Nursing Home and the Home of Compassion.
