Volunteering
Pastoral Care Volunteers
In February 2007 Southern Cross Care (Broken Hill) Ltd extended its existing care programs to include a new project which encourages community volunteers to build relationships with residents. The Pastoral Care Volunteers work in St Anne's Nursing Home, Aruma Lodge and the Broken Hill War Veteran's Hostel.
The role of the Volunteer is to help celebrate the Resident's life and experiences and to share their unique stories in a relationship of trust, empathy and respect, acknowledging the needs of the whole person, physical, mental, emotional and spiritual.
The Volunteers receive extensive training with weekly training sessions over eight weeks looking at issues involved with communication skills, grief and loss and dementia. When the training program is completed the Volunteers are assigned to one or several residents, depending on the amount of time the Volunteer has available and will be encouraged to visit on a weekly basis.
The Volunteers will be supported and supervised by the Pastoral Care Co-ordinator for Southern Cross Care (Broken Hill) Ltd, Joy Clark, who will provide additional training, encouragement and care to the Volunteers
Southern Cross Care believe this program will make a significant and highly valued contribution to the life of the Residents in Southern Cross Care.
If you are interested in becoming a Pastoral Care Volunteer you can contact Joy Clark, Pastoral Care Co-ordinator on (08) 8080 1850.
